Leaving for the Best in Me

October 23, 2015

LEAVING FOR THE BEST IN ME

It's been 8 whole years in this city now
And somehow I still feel alone
The longer that I'm staying here
The less it feels like home

I've always fought to get my dues
After all that I'm left with nothing
Even as I thought the best of you
I was always missing something

But now I've found a way to face the injustice of my days
As I'm reborn into this world a little scared; not long afraid
You had your chance to make the most of me
But I'll never let you have me for free

My voice is lost from crying out
So my pen shall do my speaking
More than fed up without a doubt
I'll always wonder what you were thinking

Though we'll never be as we were before
I'll try to harbor no ill feelings
I pray you don't do this any more
To someone else just as deserving

Fear won't hold me in a cage the way that I've let you
I'm surprised by all this suddeness we've recently gone through
You had your chance to make the most of me
But I'll never let you have me for free

I couldn't help but lose trust in you
It just seemed to make the most sense
And, no, there's nothing that you could do
Empty words won't make a difference

When I finally find some peace
And balance I'll make amends
But until then I'll do what hurts the least
Then maybe we could be friends

I'm at my wits end trying to make this all alright
But the longer I've remained the more of myself I've had to fight
You had your chance to make the most of me
But I'll never let you have me for free

It's not "goodbye"; it's "I'll see you around"
Though you've built me up to knock me down
You had your chance to make the most of me
But I'll never let you have me for free

Not again...not ever again...for free
